Luca Lombardi at the Turin International Book Fair
Lombardi will discuss his new work Terra for orchestra with the musicologist Enrico Fubini
By entitling this composition Terra (Earth, but also Soil, Ground or Land) I thought about the different meanings of the Italian term. The planet we live on, the solid part of the earth´s surface, the land as a nation, and last but not least one of the four elements. The initinal stimulus came from the second meaning and its material implications (underground telluric mouvements).
Part of this composition was written in Israel, a "land" I particularly love. There I considered naming the piece "Eretz", in Hebrew, which in the combination "eretz Israel" means "Land of Israel". For this reason I included two quotations of Israel melodies: The first one from the song live in this land, the second one taken from Hatikva (Hope), the state of Israel´s anthem. My hope is, that this state will keep existing, for its own good as well as for the good of the neighbours and of ourselves.

An opera for Rome: il re Nudo
In March 2009 Lombardi´s new opera Il re nudo
is presented in Teatro Nazionale in Rome. The libretto by Sandro Cappelletto
is inspired by the comedy by Evgenij Schwarz. Written in 1934, when Europe
was already too crowded with king-dictators and the study of mass psychology
was starting to become a useful science to the exercise of power such
as the incitement to racial hate, Schwarz’s comedy revises three
Andersen fairy tales: The Princess and The Pea, The Emperor’s
New Clothes, The Swineheard and it is grafted on the satirical
and grotesque genre of so much Russian literature.
A boy and a girl want to get married: he is a swineheard, she is a princess.
They love each other, but her father is obviously against their match
and the man has already promised the girl to be married to a king, a friend
of his. Enrico, the swineheard, and his friend Cristiano have many resources:
a pot that plays, sings (as magic and powerful as Papageno’s musical
box), and solves all most difficult situations. It is the best gift two
proletarians can have: a cunning intelligence able to overcome any obstacle.
